Red Desert Ensemble presents three musical ideas during the months of August and September, 2020 that explore sound in the Summit Community Gardens in Park City, Utah (MAP):
- A curated soundwalk in the spirit of Hildegard Westerkamp that garden visitors can embark upon. Here is a document written by Hildegard that describes in detail what a soundwalk is: Soundwalking.pdf.
- A series of installations placed around the garden that invite visitors to the garden to make or listen to sounds that includes works by Pauline Oliveros, Yoko Ono, David Dunn, Christian Wolff, and several listening stations FOR MAX NEUHAUS with works by Teodora Stepancic, Laura Steenberge, Ben Richter, Laura Cetilia, Christine Tavolacci playing John Cage, Lucie Vitkova, Andre Cormier, Quentin Tolimieri and Robert Jedrzejewski, more!
- A concert on September 10 from 5:30-7PM featuring clarinet and percussion music by Iannis Xenakis, TIm Parkinson, Devin Maxwell, James Tenney, Maggi Payne, Daniel Goode, Eliane Radigue and more. Audience members are invited to participate for some of the concert. Space is limited to 40!! TICKETS
SOUNDWALK
Begin your soundwalk on the north side of the garden, the place where there is not much garden, some stacked tables and chairs, dry grass and a piece of wood that says
SOUNDWALKING by Red Desert Ensemble for Hildegard Westerkamp.
Hildegard Westerkamp is a composer who has written a lot about listening to the environment and soundwalking.
We are going to take a soundwalk.
First, stand in silence and listen for awhile.
Maybe close your eyes. Engage with the sounds around you, engage with your own body, the sound you make standing, listening, in silence, your breath.
Now let's walk.
Let's walk right out that north gate, right out of the garden. Listen.
You may make a big noise with that gate and the chain, that's ok, we are going to start outside the garden, listening in.
Now you are outside.
Did you know there was a creek here?
Listen to the water as you walk by it, as you head east towards the mountains, walking along the creek, listening.
Stop for awhile.
What do you hear?
The road.
The birds.
The children playing.
The cars.
The wind.
What else do you hear?
Do you hear the bees?
They are there in the garden, near the big tree. Let's walk around the garden, circle it from the outside.
Listen.
It's a little wild.
When you return to the front gate, you'll have heard many things. This gate makes noise too when you open it and step back into the garden.
Welcome.
Let's walk around.
Keep listening.
What else do you hear?
Walk the outer circle, listen to your footsteps.
On the dirt.
On the gravel.
On the rocks.
On the wood chips.
Walk once, or twice or three times around.
In silence.
Your footsteps and the birds.
Your footsteps and the road.
Your footsteps and the people.
What else do your hear?
Your footsteps and the creek.
Do you still hear the creek?
Touch something.
Does it make a sound?
Do the plants make sounds?
The flowers?
What else do you hear?
Do you hear the bees?
When you have walked around, make your way to the center of the garden.
Sit for awhile.
Keep listening.
What else do to hear?
Listen to the distance, listen far away.
What else do you hear?
Rest.
Come back to your body. The sounds you make, sitting, resting, breathing.
This is the end of our soundwalk.
Thank you.
